ASC Curriculum

ASC Department - Curriculum Intent

The ASC curriculum will support young people to become functional members of society, by equipping them with the skills to cope with the challenges that face them in everyday life. It will support their understanding of themselves, others and the social expectations in the wider community.

This will involve teaching them to recognise their own emotions and develop strategies to self-regulate and successfully function and transition in the community around them, whilst empowering them with functional communication skills and tools to make their requests and feelings known. Alongside this, young people will learn social skills to engage with family, peers and the wider community. This will be taught through an amalgamation of the SCERTS and TEACCH approaches, SCERTS focuses on Social Communication and Emotional Regulation, whilst the TEACCH approach provides structure to support independence and life skills, including personal safety. The ASC curriculum is designed to enable and empower our young people to be the best that they can be. Our aim is to equip them for life beyond Mary Elliot School, where they can be confident, independent and successful young people.
