Last Week's Academy news is coming to you from the PMLD department

Within our PMLD department, students have been taking part in Sensory Cookery and Exploration. Learners have been engaged in exploring different ingredients that support them to understand about themselves and the community in which they live.

Sensory Cookery and Exploration supports students to:

  • Explore and play with ingredients

  • Develop the use of their senses through smelling, touching, tasting (where appropriate)

  • Use their hands to manipulate ingredients and use tools to help them

  • Use interactive technology such as switches

  • Communicate preferences, choices and interact with others

  • Explore sensory maths such as size and amount

  • Take part in simple instructions and routines

  • Develop eating and drinking skills.

Throughout the year, students are involved in six cookery topics that are related to our broader seasonal themes:

  • Autumn Soups (Harvest Vegetables)

  • Christmas Cakes (Fruit and Spices)

  • Winter Pies (Fruit Pies, Vegetable pies, Pasties, Pastries)

  • Easter Chocolate (Chocolate spread, fondue, Easter eggs / Easter cakes)

  • Summer (Fruit Salads / Trifles)

  • Summer Drinks (Fruit Smoothies, Mocktails, Slush Puppies, Ice Cream Milkshakes)

Students are really enjoying these experiences, as you will see from the photographs attached.
