Press release: New Playground at Mary Elliot Academy Transforms Learning and Play for SEND Pupils

A Walsall school has unveiled a state-of-the-art playground designed to transform the social and sensory development of its students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Mary Elliot Academy, part of the Thrive Education Partnership says this innovative facility has already become a cherished space for both students and staff.

The playground features resurfaced areas, trampolines, climbing frames, swings, and sensory walkways, all carefully selected to provide a better multi-sensory experience. Equipment such as the trampolines and accessible swings offer pupils with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) an opportunity to test their vestibular senses, helping them feel grounded in a safe and monitored environment.

Rebecca Davies, Headteacher of Mary Elliot Academy, said:"The new playground has had a huge impact on our students. It’s not just a space for play—it’s where sensory needs are met, enabling pupils to return to the classroom ready to learn. Watching them explore the equipment and play together has been heart-warming, and even the staff couldn’t resist trying it out first!"

Replacing an underused sensory garden, the new playground ensures all the school’s outdoor spaces are accessible. It includes features for children with limited mobility, such as tactile and visually stimulating elements, alongside equipment for more active pupils. This inclusive design reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to providing excellent facilities that support every student’s needs.

The project, funded by the school, is part of a broader effort by the Thrive Education Partnership to create spaces that foster independence and engagement. Rebecca Davies added: "We are proud to lead the way in creating facilities that truly benefit our students. This playground isn’t just about fun—it’s helping pupils develop socially, physically, and academically in ways that are vital for their growth and happiness."

Though an official opening ceremony is yet to take place, the playground is already a vital resource, making recreation a time of discovery, connection, and sensory fulfillment.
