The last academy news of 2024 comes from the PMLD department.

As part of the curriculum, pupils within the PMLD department practice physical skills daily within My Body lessons. Pupils are working towards developing their physical skills as part of their EHCP’s.

They have been working really hard on their gross motor skills such as independent standing, standing in a their standing frames, reaching and walking in a Grilla frames.

Recently, a number of staff have been trained in MOVE. The MOVE Programme is an activity-based framework that enables disabled young people to gain independent sitting, standing, walking and transferring skills. The programme is underpinned by three key principles:

Opportunities:

Children learn and develop through being given opportunities to move and explore. MOVE supports settings to find the best times throughout the day to incorporate movement opportunities for their children.

Motivation:

Children are more likely to engage in activities that are meaningful to them. MOVE provides a framework to identify and work towards motivating goals that will make the biggest difference to the child and their family.

Progress:

Young people make the most progress when someone believes in their abilities. MOVE is a ‘can do’ approach that sets the bar high for children and young people with disabilities, encouraging them to work towards their goals and celebrating every achievement.

Well done to everyone supporting this programme and all the hard work pupils are putting in to developing their physical skills.
